Add backup payment method campaign

Let subscribers add a backup payment method to prevent failed renewals and reduce involuntary churn.

Add backup payment method campaign lets you proactively reach subscribers who don't have a backup payment method on file and prompt them to add one. This reduces failed renewals caused by expired or declined cards and protects recurring revenue that would otherwise be lost to involuntary churn.

Why this matters

Expired or failed cards can interrupt recurring payments even when a subscriber intends to stay. When the primary card fails, there is no fallback on file to recover the charge, and the order fails outright.

A backup payment method gives you another attempt to recover a failed first payment before it turns into a missed renewal. This directly reduces involuntary churn, revenue lost to subscribers who wanted to continue but whose payment failed for reasons unrelated to intent.

When to use this campaign

This campaign works best in scenarios like:

  • Subscribers on plans with a history of card expirations or declines

  • Segments with a high concentration of first-payment failures

  • Proactive retention pushes ahead of renewal cycles

  • General portfolio hygiene to increase the share of subscribers with a backup payment method on file

Important prerequisite

Backup payment method must be enabled in Payment recovery before subscribers can add a backup payment method. If this setting is off, subscribers cannot complete the campaign action even if they click through.

How to create an add backup payment method campaign

Navigate to Loop admin > Campaigns > Create campaign, then select Add backup payment method. Add an internal name so you can identify the campaign later.

Select audience

Choose which subscribers should see the campaign. You can target based on:

  • All active subscriptions

  • Active subscriptions without backup card

  • Specific subscriptions

    • Upload a CSV file containing the subscriptions you want to include in the campaign, or

    • Use filters to define the audience based on subscription, product, or customer.

Select channel

Choose where subscribers will see this campaign:

  • Customer portal

  • Email/SMS via third-party marketing apps

  • Both customer portal and email/SMS

Select incentive (optional)

You can optionally reward subscribers for adding a backup payment method:

  • Add a discount

  • Add a free gift

  • None

Incentives give subscribers a reason to act immediately instead of postponing the update.

Add customer portal banners

Upload banner creatives for both desktop and mobile so the upgrade offer looks right on every device:

  • Desktop banner: recommended 3912 × 964 px.

  • Mobile banner: recommended 2000 × 960 px.

Customize texts

Configure the texts shown to subscribers in the add backup payment drawer. Clear communication reduces friction and improves acceptance rate.

Set timeline

Set the campaign start and end date and time.

Note: Campaign duration by default is 1 month (difference between start and end date). Once expired, reactivation links will no longer work.

Notify completion alert (Optional)

Customer experience

When a subscriber clicks the campaign link from email, or SMS, they're taken directly to the customer portal to add their backup payment method. Any configured incentive is applied once they complete the action.

This keeps the flow to a single step: click the link, add a card, done.

Performance tracking

Track campaign results by navigating to Loop admin > Campaigns. You can review the following metrics for each add backup payment method campaign:

  • Audience: Total subscribers targeted by the campaign.

  • Clicks: Subscribers who interacted with the campaign.

  • Completion rate: Subscribers who added a backup payment method.

Use these insights to refine your targeting, messaging, and incentives over time.

FAQs

Can I run this campaign without offering an incentive?

Yes, you can launch the campaign with no discount or gift attached. The incentive step is optional and the campaign works the same way without one.

Does this campaign work through email and SMS as well as the customer portal? Yes, you can reach subscribers through the customer portal, email/SMS via a connected marketing app, or both channels at once.

What happens if a subscriber already has a backup payment method?

The campaign targets subscribers who haven't added a backup payment method, so subscribers who already have one on file fall outside the campaign's audience.

Will subscribers be able to add a backup payment method if Payment recovery has this setting disabled?

No, the setting must be enabled in Payment recovery first. Without it, subscribers cannot complete the backup payment method step even after clicking the campaign link.
