Add backup payment quick action

The Add Backup Payment Method quick action allows subscribers to securely add a backup payment method. This helps prevent failed renewals by automatically charging the backup payment method if the primary payment method fails.

Why use the add backup payment method quick action

Payment failures are one of the leading causes of involuntary subscriber churn. In many cases, subscribers still want to continue their subscription, but an expired card or failed payment interrupts future renewals.

The Add Backup Payment Method quick action helps you proactively encourage subscribers to secure their subscription before a payment issue occurs.

  • You want to incentivize subscribers with discounts or gifts for adding a backup payment method.

Optionally encourage subscribers to complete the action by offering:

  • Discounts

  • Gifts

Supported events

Choose where the quick action will be available.

Currently supported events include:

  • Subscription created

  • Upcoming order reminder

The selected events determine where the quick action URL is injected into notification payloads.


Before you begin

The Backup Payment Method feature must be enabled before you can use this quick action.

Navigate to:

Retain → Payment Recovery → Retry Settings

Enable Backup Payment Method.

Note: If Backup Payment Method is disabled, you'll see a banner while creating the quick action prompting you to enable it first. Quick action links will not be generated until the feature is enabled.


Action keys

Each quick action generates unique keys that can be used across your subscriber communications.

  • Loop notifications key — Use inside Loop email templates.

  • Klaviyo key — Use inside external communication tools.

These keys automatically resolve into the appropriate quick action URL.


How to create an Add Backup Payment Method quick action

  1. Navigate to Loop Admin → Retain → Quick actions.

  2. Click Create a quick action.

  3. Select Add Backup Payment Method.

  4. Enter an Action name (for internal use).

  5. Configure an optional Discount or Gift.

  6. Select the supported events.

  7. Click Save.



Where to use the quick action URL

Like other Loop quick actions, this action can be used across multiple communication channels.


Loop notifications

Add the quick action variable inside your Loop email templates.


Third-party tools (Klaviyo, Omnisend, Attentive, etc.)

Use the generated action key inside your email or SMS button URLs.

The same URL dynamically opens the Backup Payment Method flow for the subscriber.


Subscriber experience

When a subscriber clicks the quick action link:

  1. They are redirected to the customer portal.

  2. The Add backup payment method drawer flow opens automatically.

  3. They securely add a backup payment method.

  4. The backup payment method is saved to their subscription.

If a future renewal fails using the primary payment method, Loop automatically attempts to charge the backup payment method (when enabled), helping ensure uninterrupted renewals.


Performance tracking

Track the effectiveness of your quick action through analytics, including:

  • Link clicks

  • Conversion rates

Use these insights to optimize timing, messaging, and incentives.
