Upgrades quick action

The upgrade subscription quick action lets subscribers move to a higher-value plan directly from an email or SMS, without navigating through customer portal.

The upgrade subscription quick action lets your subscribers upgrade their subscription to a larger pack, shorter delivery interval, or premium product from the customer portal (in one click from your email). You can map upgrade profiles to the quick action, and present the available upgrade options when a subscriber clicks the link.

This article covers how to create the quick action, what each setting does, and how to use the action keys in your communications.

When to use this quick action

This quick action works well in these situations:

  • Offering exclusive discounts to subscribers who upgrade from monthly to bi-weekly deliveries

  • Promoting premium products or higher-tier plans

  • Triggering upgrade offers when subscribers reach certain milestones or order counts

  • Sending an upgrade offer at the point of subscription creation

What you can configure

For an upgrade subscription quick action, you can configure the subscription events that trigger the quick action link and the upgrade profiles subscribers can choose from.

Supported events

The events you select during setup determine where the quick action URL is injected in your notification payloads. The available events are:

  • Subscription created

  • Upcoming order reminder

Map upgrade profiles

Select the upgrade profiles that are eligible for this quick action. Loop shows the subscriber the available upgrades from the selected profiles when they click the link. Only active profiles are shown.

You can set a Quick action link text per profile, which is used as the label for the upgrade link displayed to the subscriber. If you have not created an upgrade profile yet, set one up before saving the quick action.

Action keys

Loop auto-generates four action keys based on the action name you enter. You can find them on the quick action detail screen after saving.

URL keys - link subscribers directly to the upgrade flow:

  • Loop notifications key: used inside Loop email templates

  • Klaviyo key: used in third-party communication tools

Text keys - dynamically update the upgrade link label based on the available upgrade profile:

  • Action text key (Loop notifications): used inside Loop email templates

  • Action text key (Klaviyo): used in third-party communication tools

Using the text key alongside the URL key means the upgrade link label reflects the specific upgrade available to that subscriber, rather than a generic button label.

How to create an upgrade subscription quick action

Navigate to Loop admin > Retain > Quick actions, then click Create a quick action.

  1. Select Upgrade subscription as the action type.

  2. Enter an Action name (internal use only). Loop uses this name to auto-generate your action keys.

  3. Select the supported events where you want the quick action link to be available.

  4. Under Map upgrade profiles, select the upgrade profiles that should be available for this quick action.

  5. Click Save.

Where to use the quick action URL

Loop notifications

Add the Loop notifications key as a variable inside your Loop email templates. Use the action text key alongside it to display a dynamic, profile-aware label for the upgrade link.

Third-party tools (Klaviyo)

You can use the Klaviyo key in any tool integrated with Loop, such as Klaviyo, Attentive, Recart, or Omnisend. Add the key to your button URL so subscribers land directly on the upgrade flow. See Use it in third-party tools like Klaviyo for setup steps.

Subscriber experience

When a subscriber clicks the upgrade quick action link, they land on customer portal and see the upgrade options available from the profiles you mapped. They choose the upgrade they want and confirm. The subscription is updated to the new plan.

Performance tracking

You can track adoption and performance via analytics:

  • Clicks (link engagement)

  • Product additions (conversion)

Use this to refine product selection, timing, and incentives.
