Subscription growth best practices

Best practices to increase revenue per subscriber on your store.

Updated over a week ago

Growth is the third lever in subscription strategy. Once acquisition and retention are working, the goal shifts from adding or keeping subscribers to expanding revenue per subscriber, without increasing your ad spend. This article walks through the growth tactics that work on subscribers you already have, and maps each one to the feature you use to set it up.

Upgrade subscribers to higher-value plans

An upgrade moves a subscriber from their current plan to one with a higher order value or better margins, like a larger product size, a higher-frequency plan, or a premium tier. The best time to offer an upgrade is after a subscriber has completed a few billing cycles and shown they are happy with the product, so the offer feels like a reward rather than a sales push.

  • Upgrade via flows. Trigger upgrade offers automatically based on subscriber behavior, like offering a 1kg size to subscribers after their 4th order of the 250g size. For more details, refer to the upgrades guide.

  • Upgrade banner in customer portal. Show an upgrade offer directly inside customer portal, so subscribers see it every time they log in to manage their subscription. For more details, refer to the upgrade banner guide.

  • Upgrade subscription campaign. Send a targeted campaign to motivate subscribers to switch to a higher-value plan, outside the customer portal. Navigate to Loop admin > Campaigns > Create a campaign > Upgrade subscription campaign. For more details, refer to the upgrade subscription campaign guide.

Upsell and cross-sell additional products

An upsell surfaces a complementary product to a subscriber at a moment when their purchase intent is already high, like immediately after checkout or just before their next order processes. Unlike cold acquisition, upsells work because the customer already trusts your brand and has an active payment method on file.

  • Post-purchase upsell. Show a complementary product offer to subscribers right after they complete checkout, with a single-click accept that adds the product to their next order. For more details, refer to the upsell and cross-sell guide.

  • Upsell/cross-sell product campaign. Send a targeted campaign highlighting exclusive products or deals that subscribers can add to their upcoming orders or active subscriptions. For more details, refer to the upsell/cross-sell campaign guide.

Drive portal engagement with login campaigns

A login campaign sends subscribers into customer portal, where they see the upgrade banners, upsell offers, and other perks you have set up. It is the delivery mechanism that makes the tactics above more visible to subscribers who would otherwise never log in.

Send subscribers a one-click link that logs them into customer portal, so they see the exclusive perks, upgrade offers, and upsells waiting for them. To create a login campaign in Loop, navigate to Loop admin > Campaigns > Create a campaign > Login campaign. For more details, refer to the login campaign guide.

Where to start

You do not need to set up every tactic at once. A practical sequence for most stores:

  1. Post-purchase upsells: This is the highest-intent moment in the subscriber journey. A subscriber who just completed checkout is more likely to accept a one-click addition than at any other point.

  2. Upgrades via flows: Once you have subscribers who have completed 3 or more orders, an automated upgrade flow captures the natural moment where they are ready for a larger size or higher-frequency plan.

  3. Upgrade banner and upsell/cross-sell campaign: Layer these on to surface offers to subscribers who log in to customer portal, and to subscribers who do not.

  4. Login campaigns: Once you have offers live in customer portal, a login campaign drives subscribers there to see them.

Review your growth metrics after each change in Loop admin > Analytics to see which tactic moved the needle.
