Volume discounts overview

Reward subscribers for buying more, whether it's their whole order or your high-margin hero products.

Volume discounts reward subscribers with a better price as they buy more, so the incentive to add one more unit sits right where they manage their subscription.

We offer two types of volume discounts: order based, which looks at the total quantity or value of an order, and product based, which targets specific products you want to push. This article covers the difference between the two, how they work together, and where to find detailed setup instructions for each.

When to use each type

Use an order based discount when you want to reward subscribers for the overall size of their order, regardless of which products they add. For example, a protein powder brand can offer 10% off at $50, 20% off at $100, and 30% off at $150, no matter what products make up that value.

Use a product based discount when you want to reward subscribers for adding more of one specific product. For example, a skincare subscription brand can offer 10% off when a subscriber buys 2 bottles of a specific moisturizer, 15% off at 3 bottles, and 20% off on 4 bottles, to move that product's inventory or push a high-margin SKU.

How the two types of discounts work together

You can only have one type of volume discount active at a time.

If you try to activate an order based discount while a product based discount is active, you'll see an error asking you to disable the active product based discount first. The same applies in reverse: activating a product based discount while an order based discount is active prompts you to disable the order based discount.

Within order based discounts, you can only run one profile at a time.

Within product based discounts, you can run multiple profiles at the same time. Each profile has a configurable priority, so if a product belongs to more than one profile, the highest-priority eligible profile is the one shown and applied.
