Fraud suspected recovery strategy

Handle payments the card issuer flagged as possible fraud with a short retry window and no offers.

The Fraud suspected strategy handles payments the card issuer blocked because it suspected fraud. Repeated retries on a flagged card rarely succeed, so the strategy retries 3 times over 3 days, then pauses the subscription and emails the subscriber once.

Who this strategy targets

This strategy targets subscriptions whose renewal was declined with Fraud suspected. The card may be compromised, or the issuer may have blocked a charge the subscriber did make, and only the subscriber and their bank can clear that up.

Navigate to Loop admin > Retain > Payment recovery > Recovery strategies, then click Fraud suspected under Advanced recovery strategy. To build it from scratch, click Create strategy and select the failure reason below.

Failure reasons: Fraud suspected

Conditions: None

When to use it

Use this strategy to stop retrying a flagged card for weeks. A short window keeps you from charging a card the issuer has blocked, which protects your approval rates with that issuer.

If the subscriber confirms with their bank that the charge is genuine, they can update their payment method and resume the subscription.

How to set it up

The defaults below are a starting point. Each brand decides how many retries to run, when to email, and how much to offer.

Setting

Default

Why it helps

Retries

3 retries over 3 days

A few daily retries catch a block the bank clears quickly, without retrying a flagged card for weeks.

Emails

1 email, after the last retry

The subscriber hears from you once, when the subscription is paused.

Discounts

None

An offer won't clear a fraud block, and discounts on flagged payments can reward the wrong behavior.

After all retries

Pause the subscription

Pausing stops further charges while the subscriber sorts it out with their bank.

Example

A supplements subscriber's renewal is declined with Fraud suspected after their bank flags an unusual charge. Loop retries for 3 days, then pauses the subscription and sends one email.

The subscriber calls their bank, confirms the charge, and resumes the subscription from customer portal.
