The Mixed declines strategy handles payments that failed because something is wrong with the saved card details. Some of these clear when the card details are updated, while others need the subscriber to add a new card, so the strategy retries quietly for a week before it asks the subscriber to update their card.
Who this strategy targets
This strategy targets subscribers whose saved card has expired, was entered incorrectly, or isn't accepted. These subscribers usually still want their order, but most need to update their card before a retry can succeed.
Navigate to Loop admin > Retain > Payment recovery > Recovery strategies, then click Mixed declines under Advanced recovery strategy. To build it from scratch, click Create strategy and select the failure reasons below.
Failure reasons: Card expired, Card type not supported, Incorrect card number, Invalid payment method
Conditions: None
When to use it
Use this strategy when expired or invalid cards make up a large share of your failed payments. Card expired is common on subscriptions that have run for a year or more.
How to set it up
The defaults below are a starting point. Each brand decides how many retries to run, when to email, and how much to offer.
Setting | Default | Why it helps |
Retries | 20 retries over 45 days | A week of daily retries gives updated card details time to come through. Later retries are spaced 2 to 5 days apart. |
Emails | 13 emails, starting at retry 8 | After a week without recovery, the subscriber most likely needs to update their card, so every later retry sends an email. |
Discounts | None for retries 1 to 5, then 5% to 25% | The discount grows as the window closes, giving late subscribers a reason to update their card. It applies automatically when the subscription reaches that retry. |
After all retries | Pause the subscription | A paused subscription can be resumed later without the subscriber signing up again. |
Default retry schedule
Retries | Gap before each retry | Days after the failed payment | Discount | Email to subscriber |
1 to 5 | 1 day | 1 to 5 | None | No |
6 to 7 | 1 day | 6 to 7 | 5% | No |
8 | 1 day | 8 | 5% | Payment failed |
9 to 13 | 2 days | 10 to 18 | 10% | Payment failed |
14 to 16 | 3 days | 21 to 27 | 15% | Payment failed |
17 to 18 | 4 days | 31 to 35 | 20% | Payment failed |
19 | 5 days | 40 | 25% | Last billing attempt left |
20 | 5 days | 45 | 25% | Payment failed and subscription paused |
Note: Only the current retry's discount is active. When the subscription reaches the next retry with a discount, the earlier discount is replaced.
Example
A coffee subscriber's card expires, and their monthly renewal fails with Card expired. Loop retries quietly for a week without contacting them.
On day 8, they receive a payment failed email and update their card from the email. The order goes through with 5% off.
