Payment method revoked recovery strategy

Recover subscribers whose saved payment method was removed, by asking for a new one right away

The Payment method revoked strategy handles payments that failed because the saved payment method was removed or its authorization was withdrawn. No retry can succeed until the subscriber adds a new payment method, so the strategy emails them as soon as the payment fails.

Who this strategy targets

This strategy targets subscribers whose payment method was revoked, for example after they removed it from their account or their bank withdrew the authorization. The charge can't go through on the old payment method, however many times Loop retries it.

Navigate to Loop admin > Retain > Payment recovery > Recovery strategies, then click Payment method revoked under Advanced recovery strategy. To build it from scratch, click Create strategy and select the failure reason below.

Failure reasons: Payment method revoked

Conditions: None

When to use it

Use this strategy whenever Payment method revoked shows up in your failure reasons. It is the only default strategy that emails the subscriber on the original failed payment, before any retry runs.

How to set it up

The defaults below are a starting point. Each brand decides how many retries to run, when to email, and how much to offer.

Setting

Default

Why it helps

Retries

10 retries over 41 days

Fewer retries, 3 to 5 days apart, since a retry succeeds only after the subscriber adds a new payment method.

Emails

11 emails, starting on the failed payment

The first email goes out on the day the payment fails, and every retry after it sends a reminder.

Discounts

10% from the first retry, up to 25%

Every retry carries an offer because each one needs the subscriber to act. It applies automatically when the subscription reaches that retry.

After all retries

Pause the subscription

A paused subscription can be resumed later without the subscriber signing up again.

Example

A vitamins subscriber removes their saved card while cleaning up old payment methods. Their next renewal fails with Payment method revoked, and they receive a payment failed email the same day.

They add a new card from the email, and the order goes through on the first retry with 10% off.
