Learn how to enable and manage product swaps in Loop, allowing subscribers to easily change items and personalize their subscription experience.

Product swap in a subscription allows customers to replace the item they receive without cancelling their subscription. This is especially helpful when preferences change or when they want to try something new. With this flexibility, subscribers can continue their subscription while personalizing their experience, leading to better retention and satisfaction.

This article will guide you through setting up the product swap option in Loop and how it can be used both from the customer portal and the admin portal.


Enabling the swap option

Follow these steps to complete the process.

  1. Navigate to Loop > Retain > Product Swaps > Preferences.

  2. Enable the permission under this section to enable the swap setting for the customer portal.

  3. Now, set up the discount settings for the swapped product as per the requirement.

  4. In this section, we can select the products that you want to make available to the customers to swap with the original product.

  5. You can also select the products that you do not want to provide for swapping under the "excluded products" section.

This setting will override the setting of selected products, i.e., if a product is added to the swap settings and the exclusion list, then it won't be provided for swapping.


Swapping a product from the customer portal

Customers can easily swap their product after purchase directly from the customer portal.

Follow these steps to complete the process.

  1. The customer will log in to the customer portal, open the desired subscription, and click the Edit button next to the product.

  2. The swap drawer will open. The customer needs to select the product to swap and click on Confirm swap.

  3. Once the action is completed, the new product will replace the old one, and the subscription price will be updated accordingly.

Note: For products with multiple variants, the same product can appear in the swap drawer, since subscribers may want to switch to a different variant within that product. The current variant itself will not be shown as a swap option.


Swapping a product from the Loop admin portal

There might be a requirement if a customer phones in and asks the merchant to swap a subscription product on their behalf. In such cases, the merchant can manually swap a subscription product on behalf of the customer from the Loop admin portal.

Follow these steps to complete the process.

  1. Navigate to Loop > Subscriptions > Search for the customer with “Subscription ID” by going to the Subscriptions tab.

  2. Click on the pencil icon in front of the product to be swapped.

  3. In the next pop-up, click on Change product and select the product you want to swap from the list.

  4. After changing the product, set up the discounts you want to provide on the swapped product and click on Save.

  5. Once the action is completed, the new product will replace the old one, and the subscription price will be updated accordingly.


FAQs

Where can I find the product swap settings in Loop?

You'll find product swap settings under Loop Admin → Retain → Product Swaps → Preferences. This is where you can enable swapping, choose which products customers can swap to, and set price rules. Product swap settings are not in Customer Portal → Preferences

Can subscribers on prepaid subscriptions swap products?

Yes, subscribers on prepaid subscriptions can typically swap variants, but they cannot swap to a full different product until the prepaid period ends.

If a subscriber tries to swap to a product that is out of stock in shopify, will the subscription still proceed?

How the subscription proceeds can be configured from the Inventory settings in Loop under Tools & apps > Inventory. However, these settings only apply if the "Inventory Tracked" option is enabled for the product in Shopify's Products section. If inventory tracking is disabled, the swap product will be billed and processed as normal, even if it's out of stock in Shopify.

Is there a fallback mechanism in Loop to automatically replace an out-of-stock swapped product?

No, Loop does not currently support a fallback or backup product mechanism for swaps.

Can subscribers swap products in a bundle subscription?

Yes, you can allow variant swaps within a bundle subscription, but full product swaps are restricted for bundles. You can control this in Retain → Product Swaps.
