The referral preferences section is where you control the rules that govern your referral program, beyond just the rewards themselves. You'll find it inside Loop admin → Loyalty → Preferences → Referrals. The preferences section is split across two categories: Program rules and Fraud prevention.
Program rules
Program rules control the mechanics of how a referral actually plays out, where the referred friend ends up, when the reward is considered earned, and how the referrer is allowed to spread the word.
Setting | What it does |
Landing page URL | Decides where a referred friend lands after clicking a referral link. Defaults to your store's home page, but you can point it to a specific catalog or collection page instead. |
Referral reward trigger | Decides when the reward fires: on order placed, or on order fulfilled. Order fulfilled avoids rewarding orders that get cancelled later, since a customer could otherwise add products just to trigger the discount and cancel afterward. |
Sharing channels | Controls which channels appear when a referrer shares their link, on both the thank you page widget and the customer portal banner. Options are email, WhatsApp, X, Instagram, and SMS. |
Fraud prevention
Fraud prevention rules exist to make sure referral rewards only go to genuine referrals, not to someone abusing the system. Loop blocks self-referrals by default by matching the referrer's and referred friend's email addresses, and this runs automatically without any configuration needed. Beyond that, you can add two more layers of protection.
Setting | What it does |
Maximum referrals allowed per referrer | Caps how many successful referrals one referrer can earn rewards for. Leave it blank to allow unlimited referrals. |
New customer eligibility | Blocks the referral reward if the referred friend's email already has a prior paid order, so rewards only go toward orders from customers genuinely new to your store. |
FAQs
1. Does changing the landing page URL affect referral links that have already been shared?
No. The landing page URL is embedded into each individual referral link, which means that the referral links shared before changing the landing page URL will still redirect to the old URL.
2. If a referrer hits their maximum referrals cap, does the referred friend still get their reward?
If the maximum referrals cap set for the referrer is reached, the referred friend won't be able to claim the referral discount.
3. If I uncheck a sharing channel, do referral links already sent through that channel stop working?
No. The sharing channels setting only controls which share buttons appear on the widget and banner and doesn't affect the referral link itself. A link already sent through a channel you've since disabled will still work exactly the same.
